Audrey Heppburn e Hubert de Givenchy si conoscono nel 1953 sul set del film Sabrina e da quel momento in poi nasce un'amicizia che durerà tutta la vita. Givenchy disegnerà per la Hepburn il vestito per la consegna dell'Oscar che riceve come miglior attrice per Vacanze Romane, l'abito per il matrimonio con Mel Ferrer e poi quello del matrimonio con Andrea Dotti. Firma i costumi per Audrey in ben sette film, tra cui Funny Face (Cenerentola a Parigi) e Sciarada, ma soprattutto, grazie al rifiuto opposto da Balenciaga per la realizzazione dei costumi di "Colazione da Tiffany", dietro suggerimento della stessa Hepburn, Billy Wilder si rivolge proprio allo stilista francese per la realizzazione di alcuni abiti per la pellicola. "Le petit robe noir" di Givenchy diventerà un'abito culto, un pezzo di storia del costume.
