The first type of man-made shoes were sandals. On a rigid sole were applied strips of leather or ropes. In the Middle-Ages were worn only by the poorer classes, and fallen into disuse for nearly a millennium, they made their way back around the 20's with the invention of metal arch support by Salvatore Ferragamo.
