Solo il secolo scorso è stato poi reintrodotto l'uso del due pezzi, grazie all'ingegnere francese Louis Réard, che nel 1946 lo reinventa chiamandolo appunto "Bikini" dall'atollo dove in quegli anni gli Stati Uniti conducevano test nucleari, perché riteneva che avrebbe avuto effetti esplosivi! L'idea gli venne quando vide le donne che si arrotolavano i loro costumi per avere un'abbronzatura migliore.
Predecessor of the Bikini date to antiquity in the Greco-Roman world. The modern bikini was invented in 1946 by French engineer Louis Réard, he named it after Bikini Atoll in the Pacific, the site of nuclear weapon tests. The idea struck him when he saw women rolling up their beachwear to get a better tan.
