CLUTCH

This small, precious accessory  began in the nineteenth century, when women often used small embroidered silk bags,  the ancestors of today’s evening bag, were used to carry small essentials, for example a little bottle of perfume and a needle and thread, or an embroidered handkerchief and smelling salts to guard against fainting. During the Second World War, rationing meant that it became the most popular accessory, it could be made with the minimum of materials.
"To clutch”, cioè "stringere in mano".
