Soulmate / Cellmate brings together a new body of works specially conceived and produced by the artist for the Milan premises of the Galleria Poggiali. This series of works ranges from painting to sculpture, with ceramics and paintings that symbolise and represent Zhivago Duncan’s cosmology. In the exhibition the artist has recreated an image of his mind. Starting from a free and fluid speculation, in the paintings he has sketched out worlds in formation, mythical and imaginary landscapes in psychedelic colours. Zhivago Duncan thus finds himself in dialogue with the project room overlooking Foro Buonaparte, moulding and altering the cubic space by the installation of paintings of exotic and abstract forms produced using the batik technique. This is an ancient technique, the origins of which are still uncertain, which manages to give the works an incredibly rich luminosity. It is a procedure that emerged by accident during the dying of fabrics, when the presence of stains of fat or other impermeable substances prevented the colour from penetrating when the fabric was immersed in the dye bath. In this series, to make his batik works Duncan has used wax, covering certain areas of the painting with it in such a way that the colour cannot penetrate the surface of the canvas. Using this technique, Zhivago has created unique works featuring unusual forms,stemming from exotic horizons.
Born to a Danish father and a Syrian mother, he became familiar with profoundly different cultural backgrounds, characterised by stories, myths and legends that marked his childhood and are inevitably channelled into his artistic work. In the show the artist recreates a world tied up with his ancestral heredity, a connection between its physicality and the metaphysical personification of a lost world. “All this is rendered on canvas through a mesh of citations, prophecies and images of deities drawn from ancient Syrian tales. Duncan’s creative process is underpinned by a yearning to discover hidden interconnections. This exploration is expressed in a joyous universe of shapes and colours, which in actual fact conceal fragile foundations and a profound inner lamentation.” Kit Hammonds.
Milano- dal 2 Aprile al 28 Giugno la Galleria Poggiali presenta Soulmate / Cellmate, prima mostra personale a Milano dell' artista Zhivago Duncan (Terre Haute, USA, 1980).
Soulmate / Cellmate raccoglie un nuovo corpo di opere pensate e realizzate dall’artista appositamente per la sede milanese della Galleria Poggiali. Una serie di lavori che spaziano dalla pittura alla scultura in ceramica, l’artista ha ricreato in mostra l’immagine della sua mente, partendo da un pensiero libero, fluido, ha abbozzato nei dipinti degli universi in formazione, paesaggi mitici e immaginari dai colori psichedelici. Zhivago Duncan si trova così a dialogare con lo spazio cubico della projetc-room che si affaccia su Foro Buonaparte, modificando e plasmando l’ambiente con l’installazione di sculture in ceramica e dipinti dalle forme esotiche e astratte, realizzate con la tecnica Batik. Una tecnica antica, le cui origini ancora oggi non sono certe, capace di donare alle opere una luminosità incredibilmente ricca. Si tratta di un modus operandi nato da errori casuali nella tintura dei tessuti, dove macchie di grasso o altre sostanze impermeabili hanno impedito al colore di penetrare durante il bagno di tintura. Duncan in questa serie, per realizzare le sue opere con la tecnica Batik ha utilizzato la cera, materiale con cui ha coperto alcune zone dei dipinti, impedendo così al colore di penetrare sulla superficie della tela. Ha creato in questo modo dei lavori unici caratterizzati da forme insolite provenienti da orizzonti lontani.
Nato da padre danese e madre siriana, Zhivago ha avuto modo di conoscere ambienti profondamente differenti, contraddistinti da storie, miti e leggende che hanno segnato la sua infanzia e che non può non considerare e convogliare all’interno della sua opera artistica. L’artista ricrea in mostra un mondo legato alla sua eredità ancestrale, connessione tra la sua fisicità e la personificazione metafisica di una terra perduta. “Tutto ciò viene reso su tela attraverso una rete di citazioni, profezie e immagini di divinità , prese da antiche narrazioni siriane. Alla base del processo creativo di Duncan vi è una ricerca bramosa di scoprire interconnessioni nascoste.
